RAINE SQUARE HERITAGE TO NOW

Explore how the site has changed over time. History, redevelopment, sustainability and more.

AN OVERVIEW

OUR HERITAGE

Heritage is a big part of Raine Square, bound by three heritage buildings the site has been designed to pay homage, honour and celebrate some of the most significant and spectacular original architecture in Perth’s CBD.
The heritage Royal Hotel, Glyde Chambers and Wentworth buildings are being meticulously restored as part of the redevelopment and returned to their former glory.

Raine Square is a true, and unique, fusion of the old and new.  Here you will see the most beautiful integration of some of the State’s oldest and most impressive architecture with exceptional contemporary design.

The selection of Raine Square tenants echoes this approach with classic brands paired with new, urban up and coming ‘disruptor’ brands.  Raine Square is certainly a destination for anyone and everyone and one that will impress.

HERITAGE

GLYDE CHAMBERS

Built in 1900, Glyde Chambers is located next to The Royal Hotel on Wellington Street in Perth CBD.

It was built on land that had originally been owned by George Glyde who had arrived in the Colony in 1830. He was a highly successful merchant who established the firm of Glyde and Sons.

The restoration of this building is a part of current redevelopment.

HERITAGE

THE ROYAL HOTEL

A major upgrade of The Royal Hotel’s facade occurred in 1906.  Despite extensive changes around it, the hotel building has remained and has been restored to its former glory as part of the Raine Square redevelopment works (2019).

The Royal reimagined by John Parker, the man behind The Standard in Northbridge and Halford Bar in the State Buildings, the 800 capacity venue includes a restaurant and saloon bar on the ground floor, two bars and event space on the first floor and a large north facing veranda with views to Yagan Square.

MARY RAINE

OUR FOUNDER

Raine Square and the Raine Medical Research Foundation were founded by publican and business icon, Mary Raine.

Mary Raine was an astute entrepreneur and philanthropist who shaped the CBD in the 1920s. She owned many hotels including the Royal Hotel and Wentworth Hotel both located on the Raine Square site. After Mary’s husband passed away from cerebral haemorrhage in 1957 she made a generous donation to University of Western Australia to research a cure to what lead to his death.

This was the genesis of Raine Medical Research Foundation, to which Mary left the bulk of her vast fortune to support medical research. The Foundation has supported numerous major research projects, funded two centres of Excellence, established scholars, fellowships and scholarships, sponsored the visits of international research at the undergraduate level. The Raine Medical Research Foundation represents the largest recent bequest to the University of Western Australia. It is the leading provider of non-government funds for medical research council (NHMRC).

RESTORATION & COMMITMENT

COMMITMENT TO RAINE NAME AND FOUNDATION

Charter Hall undertook an extensive multi-million dollar redevelopment of Raine Square to transform the central CBD site in Perth into a seven day a week entertainment, dining and retail precinct. The redevelopment delivered 40 new stores and welcomed Palace Cinemas, the first cinema in the Perth CBD since 2013 and continues to deliver on its plan to transform Raine Square into a major Perth destination. In honour of Mary Raine, the original owner of the precinct,  the heritage-listed Hotel Wentworth and Royal Hotel have been restored and maintained.

Charter Hall Group (ASX:CHC), a leading fully integrated property group and owners of Raine Square in Perth’s CBD, is pleased to announce that it has chosen the Raine Medical Research Foundation as its charity partner of choice undertaking a corporate commitment to help support the Foundation’s future funding of medical research.

“We’ve been so enthralled by the Mary Raine story. She was a woman of great tenacity, a business leader of her day and whose legacy we want to honour by helping the community to make the connection between Raine Square and the work of the foundation she established to benefit medical research.”
